Configuring Outlook Express 5x/6x


Back to Email    

1. Start Outlook Express 5x/6x, go over to the Tools menu and click Accounts

2. This will bring up Internet Accounts where you should click the Mail tab followed by Add and select Mail as shown below

3. In the Display name field type your full name

4. Click Next which will bring up the Internet Connection Wizard

5. In the E-mail address field, type your full E-mail address

6. Click Next

7. Select the down arrow on the My incoming mail is a ____ server drop-down list and choose IMAP

8. Please change the Incoming mail and Outgoing mail text fields to andromeda.rutgers.edu or pegasus.rutgers.edu

9. Click Next

10. In the Account name field, type in your Full E-mail address

11. In the Password field, type your password for this account

12. If you wish to save your password, please make sure to check the box besides Remember password(optional)

13.  Click Next

 

14. click on the Finish button

Enabling SSL

1. Start Outlook Express, go over to the Tools menu and click Accounts

2. This will bring up Internet Accounts where you click the Mail tab and select the IMAP e-mail account you wish to change.

3. Click the Properties button

4. Click the Server tab

5.  Please type in both the Incoming mail (IMAP) and Outgoing mail server (SMTP) text field :  andromeda.rutgers.edu or pegasus.rutgers.edu if you are a student.

***Please note that if your ISP requires you to use their outgoing mail server information, you must make sure that you list your ISP's server information in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) text field.

6. Click the Advanced tab.

7. In the Server Port Numbers section, make sure the Outgoing mail (SMTP) text field is set to port 25 and that the Incoming mail (IMAP) text field is set to 993.

8. Also In the Server Port Numbers section, check the box This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under the Outgoing mail (SMTP) & Incoming Mail (IMAP) sections, as shown below.

9.  Click Apply, click OK, and then click Close.

10. Click File, and then Exit to exit Outlook Express. Outlook Express will need to be restarted to ensure changes have been applied.

11. Restart Outlook Express.

12. Compose an e-mail message addressed to yourself, and send the message.  Check your Inbox for the new message.

13. If you did not receive the test message in your Inbox, please check your email address for errors and repeat Step 12.
